Exploring filamentous fungi depolymerization of corn stover in the context bioenergy queuing operations

Recalcitrance of lignocellulosic feedstocks to depolymerization is a significant barrier for bioenergy production approaches that require conversion monomeric carbohydrates renewable energy sources. This study assesses how low-cost modifications in the supply chain can be transformed into targeted pretreatments context entire chain. research aims overcome physiochemical barriers corn stover necessitate increased severity downstream terms chemical loading, temperature, and residence time. Corn samples were inoculated with selective (Ceriporiopsis subvermispora) nonselective (Phanerochaete chrysosporium) lignin-degrading filamentous fungal strains, then stored aerobically determine working envelope pretreatment achieve lignin degradation. Dry matter loss gross makeup varied by length treatment (2 4 weeks) moisture content treated (40% 60%, wet basis). P. chrysosporium biomass was elevated compared C. subvermispora biomass; however, also induced additional composition changes suggestive depolymerization. These results highlight must balance convertible material potential reduction recalcitrance. Techno-economic assessment (TEA) short-term queuing system indicated viability this approach conventional operations. Total cost estimated at $1.65/ton stored. After applying credit $1.48/ton from savings phase using pretreated biomass, total $0.80 lower than traditional approach. While TEA suggested treating most economically viable storage method designed fungal-assisted system, future should focus on such as those observed biomass.
